Hong Chi Climbathon

The Human Race

By: Christopher Gallaga

We have not wings we cannot soar; but, we have feet to scale and climb, by slow degrees, by more and more, the cloudy summits of our time. - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The reporter asked me if I was confident of winning: I was confident my team would not reach the top first, but no matter, the winners would be the students of the Hong Chi Association.

In the end the HKCA team finished last – in 11th place with a time of 13:35. To be frank, Francis Lo, Hans Wergin, Heinz Oertli and Arno Urch climbed at a much faster average rate than that. I timed myself; since I am very fat, and needing to stop to tie my shoes half way up, I timed in at a slow 4:10. But in any event we were bound to be in the back of the pack. We were in good company. The HKYCC team from IVE (Ken Chow, Chui Ho Kan, Kwong Ka Man, Chu Kwok Hei, Lai Hoi Kit and stand by runner Yip Yan Lung M) were next with  a time of 10:55. Our group of cooks best runners were the HKYCC team from HITDC (Wong Kwok Wai, Chui Wing Yip, Choi Ka Hing, Chui Ai Lung, Wong Chi Kin, and stand by runner Wong Hoi Tai) who finished in  7th place with a remarkable time of 9:43. Even with our late breaking times we three groups of chef, climbers managed to help raise HK$75,00 in funds for Hong Chi, as well as awareness of their students and their good work.

The reporter asked me if we thought we might be able to beat the Hong Kong Fire Department, or the Hong Kong Police Department who train for this event as part of their daily job: I said I sure hope not. While I am glad to be able to run in the same race with these fine professionals, there would be something wrong with our society if we chefs could beat them to the top.

All in all, the reporter asked me a lot of questions, but she never asked me why. Why do it? Why would a chubby, aging, chef, risk injury and absurdity, on his day off, racing against firefighters and police constables to the top of the 75-story Central Plaza?

If she had asked me, I would have told her I was collecting smiles, and courage, because I was. I, and my fellow chef colleagues were collecting the smiles and the courage of the hundreds of students of the Hong Chi Association, who work every day to lift themselves up the steep steps of intellectual disability, in order to achieve the highest summit of their being.

Hong Chi Climbathon, occurring late each October is the only fundraising stair run in town to support people with intellectual disabilities. For more information and to prepare for next years climb go to http://www.hongchi.org.hk/climbathon/eng/index.html
